Ooooooohhhhhhh, wat spannend!

For English translation, scroll down

That's all folks.

As many of you know, we have had two English girls living here with us in the Netherlands, since last summer. Miyax Romy Schneider and Miyax Grace Kelly. Although I usually go to puppy school with the new pups, this was not possible due to circumstances. Romy and Grace behave reasonably, that is, they sometimes come when we call and before they get food they sit down. That's all folks. Well, it's not much, I know, but, ..... I comfort myself with the excuse that they are Saarlooswolfdogs so anybody will understand if they do not listen. Yet I knew something had to be done. And although I obviously know how to raise and train dogs, I always need that exra motivation to go to puppyschool meetings every week. Of course, I do not want to be the laughing stock of the class every week, so I will practice a bit more at home not to be too foolish on the field. So ... I took the step and asked Sandra (the owner of the doggytrainingcenter) when there would be an opening in a starter class. I would start with Grace, because .... she is something, a handful! Grace loves to be naughty! She is the most naughty of all our Saarloosjes. If something disappears from the kitchencounter, if there is rubbish from an unidentifiable demolished object somewhere, if items of clothing have been removed from the laundry basket, if the trash can has been turned upside down or if small dogs are bullied on a walk  Yes, you guessed right, then Grace is the first name we call. So it seemed logical to us to first teach this unguided projectile some rules. No sooner said than done, there was room on the Wednesday evening, so I signed up.
Although Grace is the toughest of the two English ladies and people do not feel so scary to her, it was incredibly exciting for her that first time. Being alone in the car, instead of with her sister or one of the older dogs wass already quite hard on her. And as it is only a 10 minute drive, she did get sick. Hmmm, I would clean that up later, on the way back I would put her in the other bench. Once out of the car she looked around suspiciously. Every blade of grass had to be sniffed on the field.
She didn't feel the other people or other dogs were very interesting at that moment. At the start of the class, the dogs are allowed to play with eachother, but Grace was a loner, exploring the terrain by herself. However, she kept a close eye on me. As soon as another dog came to see and cuddle with me, she came storming up towards me and gave the dog a snarl. Jealous little girl! After a few minutes we were asked to call our dogs and put the leash on. The other participants had already finished puppyclass, as I should have done. The dogs already knew how to sit and stay. We started with a walk and had to ask for attention from the dog (they had to follow nicely) and get the dog tosit down once in a while, preferably right next to you. ... well not so much with Grace. The walking beside me, she did reasonable. But sit? No way. And eventhough I took some smoked sausage with me as reward, she refused to sit down. It was all too exciting for her, so we just did the walking practice. Second assignment was to let the dog walk next to you to a small pole then let the dog sit, just click the leash off and then back up and walk back to your place with the dog neatly next to you. Hilarious ..... Well, with most  dogs it went pretty well! But with Grace ???? I was very grateful to the trainer for giving the group an explanation about the total lack of 'will to please' with the Saarloos. He added that the Saarloos was one of the most difficult dogs to raise. Pfff, that gave me some air, now we would not be the laughing stock of the week. But although I knew that a Saarloos is not very obeying dog, I did want progress to be seen. So, I will have to practice with our 'little lady in red', because we already lack the puppy course.
Although, it had to be said that she can sit of course , that she did not show it at that moment, yeah ..... hmmmm, for it was all such an exciting event,  I forgave her. But I hope that next week she is going to do give it a go. Any way she became pretty tired during the lesson, that was clear and she came sitting next to me and I melted .... I was so proud that she at least dared to be on the field with me and all those strangers.
Afterwards the dogs were allowed to go off  and play for a while again, and now that she felt a little more at home, she became her naughty self again.  She liked the little poodle and the rough haired dachshund. And although the other people thought I should let her go, I knew better. She is a huge bully who loves to bite small dogs in the buttocks. Our own dachsie Moos can handle that, for he is raised by Saarlooswolfdogs and can very well defend himself, but not all small dogs are like that! She will not injure them, but the little dogs will become anxious and I will not have that on my plate. So I called her of. No bullying alowed in class, not even by Grace. She got the message calmed down. She will learn how to play with small dogs, I know! (Eventhough she will still like to bully them a bit)
